About Lewis Flinn
LEWIS FLINN has written scores and songs for national commercials, Network TV shows, Broadway plays, musicals, and independent films. His work has been described as "Potent", "Rambunctious", "Ominous", and "Otherworldy".
In the world of TV and film, Flinn composed and produced the music and main themes for primetime shows, "The Power of 10" and "Million Dollar Password" for CBS. These programs now air in over 50 countries around the world. He has also written scores for commercials- from the AFL/CIO to Life Cereal to Saab.
Flinn's theater musicals include the acclaimed Lysistrata Jones with a book by Douglas Carter Beane which premiered at the Dallas Theater Center in January 2010, and Off-Broadway in 2011 with Transport Group at The Gym at Judson, and opened on Broadway in December 2011; Other Girls, an R&B musical with Steven Sater; Like Love with Barry Jay Kaplan (NYMF 2007); The Winner, with Joe Sutton, which received it's debut at The Lyric Stage in Dallas, Texas in 2007; and Down There, with Brian Crawley, based on the book "Sex: An Oral History". His songs have been featured in Lincoln Center's American Songbook series and recorded by artists including Jennifer Holliday.
In addition to writing musicals, Flinn has composed scores and songs for over 50 productions around the country including the Tony nominated The Little Dog Laughed on Broadway and often collaborating with NY playwright/sensation Charles Busch (The Divine Sister and Die Mommie Die). Other theaters include Playwright's Horizons, MCC, South Coast Rep, the Geffen Playhouse (LA), The Cleveland Playhouse, The Old Globe (San Diego), Atlantic Theater Co., La Jolla Playhouse, Hartford Stage Co, Lincoln Center Theatre, 2nd Stage Theatre, Drama Dept. Flinn has also been a guest artist at Cornell University, Dartmouth University, and The Boston Conservatory.
Flinn has also been a long time collaborator with fashion designer Zang Toi. Under the pseudonym "Flash", he has written and performed the music for Toi's New York runway shows for over 16 seasons. The songs from these shows have been released on two albums, "Music From the Zang Toi Collections", and "Make Your Garden Grow, Music from The Zang Toi Collections, vol 2". In addition, his songs, recorded with his folk rock band, Acoustic Blue, have recently been released as well. His most recent release was a collection for cello and piano, entitled "New Music For The End of the World"
Having grown up as a classical pianist, Flinn continued his classical studies in composition at Princeton University (studying with Steven Mackey and Milton Babbitt) and Phillips Exeter Academy. He has received awards and grants from ASCAP, Meet the Composer, A.S.K. Theatre Projects, the Drama League, the National Music Theatre Network, The Dramatist Guild, the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, and the National Alliance of Music Theaters. He and his partner, Douglas Carter Beane, were the proud 2010 honorees of the Family Equality Council. They live in New York City with their children, Cooper and Gabrielle.
