Hold On - Performed by Jennifer Holliday - Music & Lyrics by Lewis Flinn

“You gotta hold on, don’t let go- in the morning when the lights are low!” For all of us who wake up in the middle of the night, wondering when things will start getting better, this is for you!

The legendary Jennifer Holliday recorded this song back in 2002 (and then I did a different version for “Lysistrata Jones” several years later but we used this track as a “Bonus” on the cast album). The amazing background vocals on this track were arranged by Biti Strauchn

The Star Spangled Banner - Arranged by Lewis Flinn

One of the many horrific parts of Wednesday, 1/6/21, was witnessing those domestic terrorists parading around with the American flag, as if they owned it. We need to take back our national symbol from these thugs. I wrote this arrangement of “The Star Spangled Banner” several years ago as a way to reimagine the traditional national anthem so it embraces the country’s current diversity of cultures and conflicts that are all trying to unite under it. We need to redefine what our flag symbolizes!

Kyrie - Lewis Flinn - Performed by Susanna Phillips

I wrote this piece, “Kyrie”, back in the fall of 2014 and my dear friend, Susanna Phillips, recorded it. After I lost my mother on Christmas Eve of that year, Susanna graciously flew down to sing it at her funeral. She would perform it again at her mother-in-law’s, Patricia Huntington, memorial service several years later. 2020 has brought unimaginable losses for so many- losses of loved ones, losses of jobs, losses of dreams, losses of hope. The lyric, Kyrie Eleison (Lord have Mercy) resonates more than ever and I’d like to share the song, along with images from 2020, as a way to remember the year, and look forward with hope.

Merry Be from Hood - Lewis Flinn - Performed by Aury Krebs and the cast of Hood

If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that we must celebrate what we have, when we have it. This song, “Merry Be” from my musical “Hood” is about just that. So although this holiday may not be what we wanted, there is still much to be grateful for, we may just need to look a little harder. “So Let’s Merry, Merry Be, time is short for reverie. Let’s join and make our memories the best that they can be!”

Do You Know My Country - Lewis Flinn - Performed by Susanna Phillips

I am lucky that the amazing Susanna Phillips (@sopranosusannaphillips) is a good friend! In 2017, we were bemoaning the political turn our country had taken. I wrote this song for her, inspired by the German Lieder songs she is famous for (the lyrics are based on a translation of a Goethe poem for the purists out there). As our country continues to be torn apart by political wars, the song came back into my mind. I think it still resonates today more than ever.
